THE BATTLE OF LEWES
Event commemorating the Battle Of Lewes, 14th
May 1264. 14:00 Costumed procession from Landport,
featuring street skirmishes. 13:45 The Gallops open space. Charge of Prince
Edward & marking of the White Cross. 14:00 De Montfort’s & The
King’s Men gather outside the Black Horse Inn. 14:15 The second Vignette is
played out. 14:30 Procession down High Street and Storming of the Town Gates.
14:50 The army of the Barons and the King’s army at the Bowling Green. 15:00
Attack on the Castle while much of the town burns. 15:15 Armies make their way
the Priory, beside the Helmet Monument to the Battle of Lewes in the grounds of
the Priory. 16:00 Surrender of the King to Simon De Montfort. 16:00 Thirty
minute mystery play in the Priory, after which, both armies go to the Dripping
Pan (Lewes Football Stadium) for more re-enactments, food & music.
